Konopiště and its surroundings - Pension Konopiště
Konopiště chateau is located 35 km to the south of the capital city of the Czech Republic Prague. Konopiště is deservedly considered one of the most beautiful Czech chateaus and also a chateau with the most beautiful collections and contents of house. Visit to the Czech Republic would not be complete without seeing residential chateau of Franz Ferdinand d’Este - successor of Austro-Hungarian throne, whose assassination (June 14, 1914, Sarajevo, Serbia) started the First World War, in which 25 million people died.
Konopiště castle was found as Gothic fortress in the manner of French castles probably by bishop Tobiáš from Benešov by the end of 13th century. Jiří from Šternberk made the first intervention to middle-age structure and further the Hodějovskýs from Hodějov on the beginning of the 17th century. The Vrtbas from Vrtba changed Konopiště to baroque residence in the 18th century. Archduke Franz Ferdinand d´Este, who bought the chateau from the Lobkowitzs in 1887 rebuilt Konopiště into a magnificent residence of future emperor. Unfortunately, in 1914 he is assassinated in Sarajevo, together with his wife Sophia, which cuts stately era of the chateau. Three orphaned children were evicted and the chateau was expropriated. Nowadays, however, Franz Ferdinand’s great-granddaughter, princess Sophia from Hohenberg, asks its recovery including its museum collections, which basics come from Franz Ferdinand’s heritage after duke of Modena.
